VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE

Believe it or not, I have never played the sport.  I was a volleyball 1streferee in Ohio for 18 years and became  student of the game.  I learned from some of the best coaches out there and the game became my passion.

I coached HS for 26 years, was a Club Director in Ohio for 12 years, prior to stepping into the Club Director at DME in 2015.

WHY DO YOU COACH VB AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT IT?

I coach because I had great coaches that made a difference in my life. In coaching I get to work with young people. I get to guide them in 2 of the most important games they will ever play: life and sports.  Coaches get the opportunity to help mold young people into adults and I cannot think of a better profession in the world today.

VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE (PLAYING AND COACHING):

I started playing volleyball in middle school and continued to play 4 years in high school.   I was a member of one of the very first Florida Elite club teams.   After high school I spent 2 years playing volleyball at Florida State College at Jacksonville before transferring to the University of Florida to pursue a career in Nursing.

I first started coaching 10 and under while at Florida State College.  I was brought back to coaching in 2007 when I had the opportunity to coach boys and girls middle school volleyball.  When my oldest was 10 she expressed an interest in playing club volleyball and I had the honor of coaching in that environment as well.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL?  OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

I coach volleyball to spread the love and passion for the game.  It is so rewarding to see young individuals grow in their technical skill of volleyball but also in life.  There is so much more to coaching than wins and losses.  This is where lifelong friendships are made, an environment where tough life lessons can be learned, the sense of responsibility and accountability developed.  It’s a place to make a positive impact on a young life at the same time allowing the young athletes to make a positive impact on my own!

HOBBIES

Volleyball of course!  Anything crafty- I love to sew, make things, and take pictures.  I also love spending time with my family!

VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE (PLAYING AND COACHING)

Started playing in high school my junior year at Iona Preparatory school in New Rochelle, NY. During that time we made it to the championship and was the only underclassman to start. My senior year I received MVP at the end of the season and led the team in kills, blocks, and aces. After graduation I went to play for Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY as an outside hitter. Marist was a D2 club in the NECVL (New England Collegiate Volleyball League) conference. During my time there we made it to divisional playoffs all 4 years and junior year we made it to the championship as the 6 seed playing the 1 seed and lost in the final set giving them a run for their money. I played an active roll with the team on and off the court with my first year being the treasurer, second year the vice president, and final two years as the president/captain. Throughout college to now I continue to play beach volleyball competitively and have won 8 tournaments in NY, CT, and FL. I have coached boys and girls volleyball for several years at the club and high school level in NY and FL. Some of the programs I have been affiliated with include Westchester Pride Volleyball Club, Woodlands high school, Iona Preparatory high school, Father Lopez high school, and currently with DME.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL?  OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

The best aspect of coaching is the ability to spread the love and passion I have for the sport to the boys and girls around me. Volleyball has given me so many opportunities, friendships, and life lessons that I will continue to instill to those I coach. Being able to teach what I have learned throughout the years, both physically and mentally, can help grow others to be the best they can be both on and off the court.

HOBBIES

I like to do anything outdoors, play volleyball, travel, try new things, work out, spend time with friends, go to sporting events, learn, hang with my cat Boots, anything really.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN VOLLEYBALL

Boys High School State Final four twice. Club National Runner up at AAU, Many All County players. While never winning any lavish grand prize, I’ve done some awesome stuff in my career. Played against national teams, Olympians, worked with and learned from professionals (players and coaches). Built a productive club in both adult college club and juniors club levels. But the biggest accomplishment to me is having coached both club and high school (boys and girls) year-round, four teams and having made so many memories over the years with those teams.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL?  OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

I enjoy connecting with the players, getting them to buy in to something different. Pushing someone to be better than they were. I enjoy seeing lightbulbs go off in their heads and shine bright when successfully executing a tough skill set. I enjoy building character and letting kids make tough choices whether they fail or succeed (Sometimes they have to fail to learn how to pick themselves back up). I enjoy NOT babying kids and being tough on them, so they develop thick skin and don’t become part of this increasingly sensitive world. I enjoy teaching independence, confidence, discipline and above all a great sense of humor to balance out all the tough work we put in.

HOBBIES

Basketball in any form. HUGE Miami Heat Fan. Playing NBA 2K. Spending time with family and Traveling.

2011 and 2012 All American
2011 and 2012 MVP

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL?  OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

I enjoy sharing my love and passion for the sport with others. Teaching the technical parts of the game are important, but I also make it my mission to establish a positive culture.  Volleyball to me is more than a sport it is a lifestyle. I love seeing players come in the gym as strangers, but leave as family.

HOBBIES

Volleyball, relaxing in the sun, reading, and more volleyball.

PAT DeSTAAFFINO
14 Elite-D Team Coach

Math Teacher, Spruce Creek High School

VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE

I was a beach rat on the sands Daytona Beach and played beach for many years. I never had the opportunity to play organized indoor.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN VOLLEYBALL

Coaching mostly developmental teams throughout my career, I have seen the strides that players make during the course of a season. One of my teams finished 11-1 in match play at AAU Nationals in Orlando. Our lone loss came at the hands of the team that finished 2nd in the Nation. Most of those players played in college and one went so far as to be the libero at The Ohio State University.

WHY DO YOU COACH VB AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT IT?

I enjoy helping guide people to be their best self, on and off the court. I learn a lot each year about others and a lot about myself. I think coaching allows me to help others find who they are as people and what they are passionate about in life. My hope is to be a positive role model for these young ladies and help teach them life skills through volleyball.

HOBBIES

I enjoy break dancing with my homies, doing stand up comedy at dive bars, performing on American Ninja Warrior, fishing for the elusive Madalorian tree hopper. and fabricating stories for bios.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL?  OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

Obviously I love the game of volleyball, but more importantly I love how the game of volleyball has shaped my life, taught me discipline, purpose, and mindfulness.  I have the opportunity to utilize volleyball to do the same for other aspiring athletes; utilize volleyball to teach that hard work, goal minded focus, as well as, guts and determination can move you positively forward in life.  I love to mentor and establish a standard of excellence for myself and those around me.

HOBBIES

With three children that are actively involved in swimming, volleyball and baseball there is little time for my own personal hobbies.  I love to write and hope someday to publish a book.

VOLLEYBALL EXPERIENCE (PLAYING AND COACHING)

I started playing volleyball when I was 10 at Florida Elite which eventually turned into DME. I haven’t ever officially coached a team but I am so excited to share what I know about the game and the passion I have to make it a fun season.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN VOLLEYBALL
During my 13’s season at DME, my team won a bid to the junior Olympics and got to travel to Indianapolis to play the top of the top teams.  I am a junior in high school and have had the privilege of making varsity two of my three years in high school and was named the scholar athlete both of those years.  I am looking to get recruited so maybe next time I answer this question I can say that.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL?  OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?
For me, volleyball is what brought me out of my shell and was the first thing that I could really put my all into while enjoying what I was doing.  I coach so that I can bring that fire out in my players and further their mindset into what this sport truly requires as an athlete and teammate.

HOBBIES
Volleyball takes up a good chunk of my life, no complaints because I love everything about it, but other than that I am into taking pictures of the sunrise or going to the beach and playing some Sodoku. I also like to do things, like play beach volleyball, with my friends and family.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL? OR WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

Volleyball is so much more than just simply a sport to me – it helps to define me. Volleyball has played an integral part in my life and shaped me into the person I am today. Like I said, volleyball is so much more than a sport – it is an avenue to learn skills and build relationships that will far exceed a person’s time playing the game.  As a coach it is my mission and hope to emulate the atmosphere I had as a player where those same skills can be learned, lifelong relationships can be made, and where a pure love and joy for the sport of volleyball can be developed.

WHY DO YOU COACH VOLLEYBALL AND WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT COACHING?

This will be my first season coaching as I just recently finished playing myself.  I was blessed to play for some of the best coaches in the business which I suppose inspired me to want to stay involved in the game.  Volleyball has had such a big impact on my life and ultimately I just want to share my love for the game in any way I can and help these young girls create memories and build skills that will last much longer than their volleyball career.

I enjoy spending time at the beach, with my family, reading, and doing just about anything outdoors.
